Yoga at The Haven

Practising yoga should feel like going on a journey, with the exception that instead of travelling outwards, you travel inwards.

On a typical yoga class a The Haven we start by turning our attention inwards and acknowledge how we feel. Although we work with Asana (yoga postures), one soon realises that Asana are only a small part of what yoga is about. To a casual observer, it may look like we are simply making shapes with the body. During Asana we develop interoception (internal awareness).
We learn to listen to the body from the inside, to work with the body and not against it.

One of the leading principles of yoga is Ahimsa (non-violence) and we apply this principle during our yoga practice. You will be encouraged to listen to your body and to practise with awareness and with respect for your limitations. The Ego is dropped and an attitude of non-competitiveness, non-judgement and acceptance is welcome.

We also learn to breathe fully by exploring the 3-part breath and the full yogic breath. The breath is like a bridge linking body and mind. Synchronizing breath and movement together is always encouraged and this has a deeply calming effect on the nervous system.

Depending on how long you have been practising yoga, you’ll have a choice to join a mixed abilities’ group or an intermediate level class. At the intermediate level you’ll be introduced to a variety of Pranayama (breath-control) techniques, as well as developing a more vigorous Asana practice, like the Suryanamaskar (Sun Salutations). The practice of meditation is sometime introduced and some of the philosophical teachings of yoga are also touched upon.

Yoga is very individual and should ideally be taught one-to-one. At The Haven classes are very small and limited to a max. of 5 students. This gives me the opportunity to get to know my students well and to offer adjustments, coaching and encouragement which are tailored to the individual. For those students who prefer to receive bespoke lessons these can be arranged.
